Lineless Reimu and Marisa

Here’s one of those random experimental things I do sometimes. I drew Reimu and Marisa on paper, and I decided to scan it and trace over it with the line tool (I usually use the brush tool) and bucket tool, and then I removed the lines. The walk cycle sorta reminds me of this, because… it’s not that good. Anyway, I’m not really planning on doing anything with these graphics, it’s just something I felt like doing. Here‘s what they look like with lines, if you’re wondering.

Also, here’s a wallpaper.

  • Hmm … spiffy trick there. :x

  • I managed to amuse myself for 10 minutes just making those to walk around and stare at each other with random expressions…

  • these look pretty good, you could probably stick with those kind of drawings

  • Amazing…who knew your art would look completely different if you removed the lines? Please stay true to your word and keep it as is though.

  • Wallpaper Hooray!

  • They can walk,Awesome!

  • I actually really like the style of these. Like Blargel I actually had quite a bit of fun just messing with the walking and expression changing.

  • what….the……whoooaa…
you should make an “EX-create.swf” with those..

and for some reason…i would like to see the Aki sisters and Chen in that same format.

  • Yay! New Designs! New Wallpapers!

  • Looks pretty nice. I demand a 1920*1200 wallpaper

  • What happened to Shift-key?!

  • I have noticed though.. that the up and down arrows seem to be really sensitive, like pressing up once seems to go through several faces..
And you can send Marisa and Reimu to walk off the side of the screen forever. :o

  • I made them walk towards the edge expecting them to come out from the other side.

  • Miko Kombat?
Still it looks nice and was fun to play with.

  • Good show! But removing the lines seems to have things blend together somehow, like Marisa’s face with her hair. (note: that’s the only area that i saw it, really)

I would keep the lines in, it keeps everything together for lack of a better term. Or at least put a “divider” in places where the boarder can become saturated, like a shadow.

  • @Mecheye: That really depends on your monitor’s contrast setting.

@Anon: You can make this yourself pretty easily if you save the Flash (SWF) file, open it in something like Media Player Classic, put it in fullscreen, pose Reimu/Marisa (note: you’ll need to give the Flash area focus by clicking in it, otherwise you’ll trigger MPC’s keyboard shortcuts instead), and hit Print Screen.

@KirbyM: I actually really like this style. Perhaps, in future SWFs, you could make the outlines a togglable option…? (Note: I know very little about creating Flash animations so I don’t know how feasible this would be.) Also, you might want to check for only key presses for up/down, rather than checking the status of the key. Again, I don’t know if this would be easy in Flash… but if I was coding it in VB, I’d remember the state of the key each time I check it (on the current frame), and only change the face if the key state previously (on the previous frame) was not pressed.
    E.g.
CurrentlyPressed = [check the key state here]
    If CurrentlyPressed Then
    ____If Not PreviouslyPressed Then
    ________ChangeFace
    ________PreviouslyPressed = True
    ____End If
    Else
    ____PreviouslyPressed = False
    End If

Code? On my Walfas? It’s more li-… nah, it just doesn’t sound as good when I say it. =/

  • Like the previous walking animation, this one has the problem that the body doesn’t bop up and down when walking.

If you added a little bit of movement from the hip up when they are walking, it would make it all much more natural and way less static.

  • The expression change thing is a bit too sensitive for me. Then again, i’m using the school computer, so I guess maybe the school’s computer is kind of weird?

Yay for lineless characters! It actually looks kinda nice, although it DOES look entirely different without lines.

@Pokute: They look like they’re ice-skating or something, don’t they?

  • I like it, but I’d rather you’d keep the original for your future flashes though. Maybe like what SU said, you can toggle the lines as an optional feature to use for your touhou flashes.

It’s weird that those lines make such a big difference with your characters and their appearance.

  • This makes me realize how AWESOME lines are

  • I’m with everyone else here – removing the lines isn’t necessarily bad, but it certainly is very different. I think for the work that I’ve seen here the “with lines” style works better, but it’s really interesting to see without.

  • @Mecheye: Also cool name, although according to Super Star Ultra your name is now spelled “Mekkai”.

I’m at home now. The face changer IS just sensitive. Ah well. It’s still cool. I’m holding down the up key, Reimu keeps on having mood swings. XD

  • @Pingy: Yeah, probably because it’s at 24 (or 30?) frames per second, and it’s usually like… 12. I didn’t bother finding out how to make it work only when the key is pressed, not when it’s held.

    @Anon: Here you go.

@SomethingUnreal: I could probably have some line-enable/disable thing, but that’d probably be complicated and I’d have to redraw everything. Because I normally draw lines with the brush tool, and disabling those types of outlines would be uhh… well, it’d look like this. Which would be strange.

@Pokute: Yeah, I noticed that the walk cycle lacked the moving-up-and-down thing. But when I added that in, it also sorta looked strange also, so I just decided not to have it. And since I don’t think I’ll be using this style for anything other than experimental things, it shouldn’t be too big of a deal.

  • If some how the ‘removed lines’ style makes it to a daily flash, or a touhou comic, I think it would be neat if used towards the end of a segment, like a ‘border between art and lines’ spell, and all of the sudden every ones lines are removed. XD

  • Awesome!

As for a function to toggle the lines:
I don’t think it’s really necessary. Removing the lines is a nice stylistic device for artistic purposes but not really “practical” to be used for the actual flashes which live from resembling comics in a way.

  • yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! i make Reimu angry at Marisa while Marisa runs for her life!

  • Why is Reimu always on top of Marisa?

  • Hey, KirbyM!

I took your Wallpaper and lined Reimu and Marisa!….And the ground. Is that ok with you?

  • @Mariku: Yep, that’s fine.
