Animated Documentary (Part 8: Final)

Scene 8

(This is the last scene of the documentary! The embedded flash is in the full post, as usual.)

Here is the last part of this eight-part documentary! In this scene, interviewees discuss where they see animation going in the future, whether it’s the technology, the methods, the trends, or whatever else. For the credits, I threw in some random looped animations from the site to make it more interesting. I figured that it makes sense since it’s an documentary about animation, so it would be nice to have some frame-by-frame animation in there. Then there’s also a list of most of the URLs for the images I used in the last eight scenes, just to give credit. And that’s it!

  • Yay! This was awesome.

  • Bravo! Something of an indecisive finish in terms of the commentary, but you can’t really help that. And we end on various Walfas animations behind the credits, so it’s all good!

The visual highlight of this segment was the big 3D viewer helmet on the one girl, I think.

So is the animation teacher you interviewed actually the one who’s been teaching you? I wonder if she’s seen the site and commented…

  • SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES

AnywaSUBLIMINAL MESSAGESy… not bad, not bad…

Though whSUBLIMINAL MESSAGESat was that helmet thing on that perSUBLIMINAL MESSAGESson’s head?

  • I liked it

    shrake girl was awesome

  • Hey, you showed (shown? showededed?) this to that animation class, right?

Did you still include all the Touhou animations in the credits?

…I’m probably being an idiot right now =X

  • @Sprocket: Nina (the one with the pink shirt) was one of the teachers at the summer course I took last summer, and Ru (the one with the orange shirt) is also a teacher at the same program, though I never had her as a teacher. She also happens to be Nina’s friend, which is partially how I got the interview. Yeah, I just realized that wasn’t part of the question at all.

Anyway, the course was only like two weeks long, so the only actual formal teaching she’s done for me was in those two weeks (although in those two weeks I was able to move away from just using “motion graphics” and on to frame-by-frame animation). This wasn’t really in your question either but I felt like saying it.

Anyway, the project asked for a “mentor”-type person to make suggestions and stuff to improve the project, so that’s what it meant by “for being a mentor” in the credits. She knows about the site and I don’t think she’s commented on the site itself, but she’s commented a few times via email.

@Tesmy: I didn’t show it to the animation class (because that was last summer); this was a school project (regular school) for high school seniors. And yes, I did include the Touhou animations in the credits. The only thing I really changed in this scene was the names.

  • I will marry Nina

That was really cool. When I saw the quetion I also thought in holograms.

  • Hidamari Sketch music? Anyways, nice series. Really enjoyed watching it.

I’d really dislike a holographic version of Jurassic Park though…

  • ⑨th

    A W E S O M E !

  • I was hoping that one of the people would answer something like adding another dimension to animation (time!), but I liked what people were coming up with.

Overall, a fun documentary. Do you ever plan on doing something like that again? :P

  • I giggled at the Darth Vader helmet’s appearance.

Also, I didn’t notice until just now that Ru (I think) had a mole on her cheek :o

  • clap clap clap

  • NoWaiThatsImpossible:O

  • Verry well done KirbyM, This series was fun and educational.
    FunDucational you might say.

  • GEWDJA!

Way to finish strong (especially with the Shraek girl). But all in all, how long did it take you to make that whole presentation?

  • That must have been one of the best documentaries I have seen!
It’s in par with Bill Nye (he’s awesome :P)
LOL at the helmet, then the 3-D glasses on top of it. XD
You must have gotten a good grade. (I’m sorry if that sounded rude.)

  • Nice! I can’t tell because they’re flash, but how long are these all together?

  • what is she wearing on her head???
    >:O

  • @KirbyM: Appreciate the details, even those not directly in response to the question. :-)

What have responses to the project been like in the real world? Have the interviewees seen themselves as rendered in your style? Have your teachers/classmates commented?

Oh, and speaking of the “Art Class”-tagged posts, if you hadn’t seen yet, one of your Japanese fans has posted a subtitled version of your “Yarrr!” Flash comic on Nicovideo.

  • *Imitates Konata*
    Good job!

  • Whoa, incredible just as informative, creative and attractive as a documentary has to… Wait a sec?! Have I been watching a documentary then?

  • awesome! :D

  • LOL Darth Vader XD

  • Ah, so Unnamed Character goes to Name Omitted High School?

  • Awesome! I enjoyed all 8 parts. Great insights on animation!

  • congratulations miss this day are a great day for you :)

  • I laughed so hard when I saw the Virtual Boy in there.

    Great job, enjoyed this series~

  • Oh man, that helmet was awesome. I want that in create.swf. Just… seeing that picture was amazing.

  • the end has animation!!!!!!!!

  • While I enjoy 3D animation, I think 2D also has its own special charm, so I hope that even when TV goes holographic in the future, there will be an option for flat-screen viewing.

  • I hardly consider playing a Virtual Boy “going into a virtual world”! So much eye strain…
